According to New Oxford American Dictionary, the concept landscape entails all the visible features of an area of land, its landforms, and how they integrate with natural and man-made features. For short, Landscape regeneration is the process of restoring the environment. It involves encouraging long-term sustainability, increasing biodiversity, and enhancing resilience among other processes. If properly designed, regenerative landscaping can potentially provide certain benefits, some of which include: effective erosion control, good water management, reduced maintenance costs, elimination of toxic chemical use amongst others.
Sustainable Development is the idea that human societies must live and meet their needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. The sustainable development goals are the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. They address the global challenges we face including poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace, and justice.
Humans want economic growth, better equity, improved health, and appropriate nutrition, for both the short and long term, and also want environmental conservation, low climate impact, maintained land productivity and managed livelihood risks.
Many species habitat and land have been altered due to the increasing human population and the need for more food production, and economic growth. While some species can survive with or without connectivity among habitat, some species will go into extinction when there is no habitat connectivity.
How can landscape regeneration be done to improve habitat connectivity in a way to enhance species functions, and to ensure that food production is achieved in a sustainable manner with the increasing human population and urbanization?
More so, looking into the social angle of landscape regeneration for sustainable development, how can landscape regeneration project be done in a way that it will reflect people’s interest to willingly participate in landscape regeneration projects for effective management and sustainability in terms of development?
Give the exponential increase in the growth rate of human population and the resultant spike in human needs, there is need to improve habitat connectivity and integrity, species functions and human’s standard of living. It is therefore important to always bear the concept of sustainable development in mind.
How then do we achieve landscape regeneration which is in sync with sustainable development?
